Free Reading Speed Calculator
Know how many words you read and how long it took? Turn those two numbers into words per minute, see them against adult averages, then measure your real pace for free.
Reading speed calculator
Enter a word count you already know and the time it took to read it. The calculator converts them into words per minute — pure arithmetic, no reading session needed.
Reference averages from Brysbaert et al. (2019): 238 WPM for nonfiction and 260 WPM for fiction, based on adult English silent reading. Averages, not percentiles, and not Chinese or Japanese CPM norms.
Want a measured number instead of arithmetic?
Take the free natural reading WPM testWhat the calculator gives you
- Instant WPM arithmetic
- Words and minutes go in; a rounded words-per-minute value comes out, using the same formula the reading tests use.
- Adult average comparison
- Your result is plotted against the 238 and 260 WPM research averages for adult English silent reading.
- No sign-up, nothing stored
- Everything runs in your browser. The numbers you type are never saved, logged, or sent anywhere.
How it works
How the calculator works
WPM = words read ÷ minutes of reading time. Convert minutes and seconds to minutes first: 4 minutes 20 seconds is about 4.33 minutes.
WPM = words read ÷ minutes
Worked example
One known word count, one known duration, one division.
| Words read | 1000 |
|---|---|
| Reading time | 4 min 20 s = 260 s |
| Arithmetic | 1000 ÷ 260 × 60 |
| Result | 231 WPM |
231 WPM is arithmetic on those two numbers — not a measured reading session and not a comprehension estimate.

Compare with the adult averages
The calculator plots your result against 238 WPM (nonfiction) and 260 WPM (fiction) from Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of adult English silent reading. Averages describe populations under study conditions, not a score you must reach.

Questions
Reading speed calculator FAQ
How is reading speed calculated?
Reading speed in WPM is the number of words read divided by the reading time in minutes. 1000 words in 4 minutes 20 seconds is about 231 WPM.
Is a calculated WPM the same as a measured one?
No. The calculator is arithmetic on numbers you already know. A natural reading test measures your actual pace on a full article with active-time tracking, which is the fairer baseline for training.
Is 238 WPM the speed I should have?
238 WPM is a research average for adult English silent reading of nonfiction, not a target. Your own measured trend on similar material matters more than any population average.
