Chinese does not separate every word with spaces, so a word-per-minute result is inconsistent. LumenRead reports Chinese-primary passages in readable Han characters per minute and keeps the measurement tied to the text you actually completed.

Average Chinese reading speed and building your own baseline
Chinese silent reading usually falls between 300 and 500 characters per minute in research and practice, with horizontal text faster than vertical and wide individual variation. Treat averages as background: measure several times on similar Chinese articles and build a personal baseline you can read next to comprehension.
Reading research places a ceiling on silent-reading speed that preserves comprehension. Be skeptical of speed-reading claims of several thousand characters per minute that never measure understanding.

What changes reading pace
- Material difficulty
- Technical terms, complex syntax, and unfamiliar topics slow comprehension, not eye movement. Slower on a hard article is not a drop in skill.
- Reading purpose
- Scanning for a date and tracing an argument are different tasks at different speeds. The right pace matches the purpose.
- Familiarity and focus
- Background knowledge speeds reading up; fatigue and distraction slow the same article down. One result is not a verdict.
Use the result as a baseline
One CPM number is not a universal grade. Compare results from similar Chinese passages, keep the reading purpose consistent, and increase the target pace only when comprehension remains stable.
