Why Chinese reading speed uses CPM
Chinese does not separate every word with spaces, so a word-per-minute result is inconsistent. LumenRead reports Chinese-primary passages in readable Han characters per minute and keeps the measurement tied to the text you actually completed.

Measure only active reading time
Timing advances only while the reading page is visible and active. Switching tabs pauses the session automatically, so background time does not reduce your CPM result.
Read CPM with comprehension
Completion and three AI-generated questions give the pace result necessary context. If questions are unavailable, LumenRead still reports speed and completion without inventing a comprehension score.
Use the result as a baseline
One CPM number is not a universal grade. Compare results from similar Chinese passages, keep the reading purpose consistent, and increase the target pace only when comprehension remains stable.
